Capital One Café, 2933 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221

Capital One Café, a coffee shop chain / branch of a hybrid bank that was launched by financial giants nationally, was opened on Wednesday at 2933 W. Cary St. at the corner of South Sheppard Street.

This is the second Capital One Café on the Richmond market, joining a place at the Short Pump Town Center which opened in 2017.

This concept features a coffee bar that serves Peet's Coffee and baked food from the local bakery Pearl's Bake Shoppe, as well as banking resources such as a 24-hour ATM, private meeting rooms and Capital One employee staff.

"The point is, this is a bank," said Courtney Rhodes, spokesperson for Capital One. "We have just re-imagined the banking experience to suit customers' needs by making it digital. ... When people start doing banks digitally, we want to create a bank that suits their daily lives. "

Customers can do whatever they can in traditional branches, such as depositing and opening credit cards with the help of Capital One employees or digitally, he said.

Besides paying for coffee, Rhodes said that all cafe services are free for the public and not limited to Capital One customers. However, Capital One card holders have the pleasure of getting a 50 percent discount on coffee.

The Carytown location was opened in a room previously occupied by Secco Wine Bar, which moved to 325 N. Robinson St in 2016; and Sheppard St. Antiques, who moved to 1126 N. Blvd .; and personal acupuncturist.

Capital One rents space, which has been built since at least early 2017. Capstone is a general contractor. Leo A Daly is the architect. Local artist Chris Milk Hulburt painted a mural on the side of Sheppard Street overlooking the building when Capital One took over.

Capital One introduced its cafes in 2011 after acquiring ING Direct, a bank that has held the rights to the cafe concept since 2001. There are now 31 Capital One Cafes in 11 markets throughout the country.

A few doors down Cary Street, Don’t Look Back owners recently closed their other concept, Best Friends Forever at 2915 W. Cary St., when Taqueria opened at Scott's Addition at 3306 W. Broad St.
